The Ukulele Alphabet: Copperline by James Taylor
Letter C, Week 2
“Copperline” by James Taylor
Obviously I chose the songs on the Ukulele Alphabet project list for a whole bunch of different reasons.
Some were picked because of the letter in question (question… hmmm, we’ll see what I decided to do for Q).
Others are songs that I already knew by heart and have been playing for years, like last week’s selection by Counting Crows. I know a lot of Counting Crows songs and they’re right in my vocal wheelhouse, so I had to slot one in somewhere!
And others I picked specifically because I loved them but didn’t know how to play them yet, so I decided to challenge myself.
“Copperline” is most definitely a challenge song. It is tough! And even now that the deadline to play it has passed, I can’t say I have fully nailed it.
It’s the lead track on New Moon Shine, the first James Taylor album I felt belonged to me and not to my parents’ generational archive.
That’s not to shade “Fire and Rain” or “Sweet Baby James” (which, actually, might have been the song that broke me when I was trying to learn guitar. James, you do not make it easy!) or anything else on the Greatest Hits album.
But there’s just something in my heart for “Copperline.” So I hope I did it justice here.
