The Ukulele Alphabet: Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen
Letter S, Week 2
“Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen
Today is Bruce Springsteen’s birthday and in this house, that’s pretty much a national holiday.
I married a guy from New Jersey who grew up in the same area Bruce did, who knows all the stomping grounds past and present where Bruce has lived, played, surfed, ate ice cream, cruised, and hung out, and who has read every Bruce biography and related book in existence.
It’s hard to say if Dan would rank Bruce Springsteen higher than baseball (or me), but they’re definitely two of his lifelong loves. And this song is very very much about Bruce’s life and how baseball relates to that.
In fact, I would consider my husband to be the foremost authority on Bruce’s use of baseball lore and terminology in “Glory Days,” which you can learn more about at length in his 20-minute research presentation, Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days”: From Speedball to Spitball.
(It has a pretty sweet title page courtesy of yours truly, I must say.)
So for our 20th wedding anniversary, here’s my tribute to my husband’s great loves, performed on the same ballfield where he played in his elementary school glory days.
